Two lines are created at opposite ends of the playing area. One line is the goal line; the other is the starting line.
One player is "It" and stands on the goal line.
The rest of the players are the "Runners".
"It" with his/her back to the "Runners" counts to 5 or 10 (depending on the length of the playing field) a number of times.
At the end of the count, he/she calls out any colour light.
Depending on which colour is called, the "Runners" must do one of the following:
Green Light: advance forward to the goal line
Red Light: stop and freeze until Green Light is called again
If any colour light other than green or red is called, the runners must continue on with the previous command i.e. advancing forward or staying still
The suspense of the game occurs as the "Runners" wonder what colour will be called.
Once Red Light has been called, "It" turns around to face the "Runners" and anyone caught moving must go back to the starting line and begin again
Once Green Light has been called, "It" must turn around once more to have his/her back to the "Runners".
Facing away from the "Runners" makes the game more challenging for "It" as he/she tries to catch the "Runners" out before they reach the goal line.
The first "Runner" to reach the goal wins.
The last one to reach the goal is "It" for the next game.
